Welcome to the Year 11 web page

This is the most important year of education so far. The leap from primary to secondary education was a milestone; choice of courses was a crossroads and year 11 is the launch pad for the future.

Achievements this year will shape the future for further education, training and employment. The more successful students are - the more doors of opportunity will open for them. Year 11 is likely to be hard but exciting. There will be deadlines to be met, final controlled assessments and intense periods of exam preparation. Students will be required to be increasingly more responsible for their own progress and learning, both in school and at home.  They should take advantage of additional sessions for revision; careers/next steps interviews and any other advice or opportunity offered. It is important that when they receive their final GCSE results next summer, that they can honestly say “I have done my best.” This means that regular revision is taking place and regular testing will occur, including PPE examinations in November.

Our year group will face some unique challenges. Being the first year of some new GCSE specifications and Government changes means that Year 11 students this year will have the following pressures: a higher percentage of the course final grade resting on May / June exams, harder subject content, more things to be remembered rather than being used in the exam, the first year of changes from grades to numbers in Maths and English. We want our students to build resilience for these challenges and to aim high. High levels of attendance will also be vital. It cannot be stressed highly enough how much impact missing of key lessons can have. Obviously we would never want a genuinely ill student in school but it is vital that they are in as much as possible; medical/dental appointments should be made outside of school hours wherever possible and holidays only taken out of term time. Please be aware that the main block of GCSE examinations will take place mid-April – end June but some BTEC subjects may have exams at any point in the year and controlled assessment will be on-going in many subjects..

King Alfred School wants every child to fulfil their potential and increase their life chances. As a pastoral team, we will be there to help, support and guide them along the way. We will be working closely with our colleagues and welcome parental support as this is crucial to a child’s education. Tutor evening, Subject Evening and Academic Review Day will provide opportunities for us to meet but should you need to contact us, please don’t hesitate to phone or email your child’s tutor or if it is subject specific, the class teacher.

We look forward to working together with the students, our colleagues and yourselves towards the best possible outcome for each individual student in their future.

Mr Paul Lockett
Head of Year 11
